surf city 2009 UPDATE!!!!

It has been a great few days here for our family at the beach. yes, with fall right on our heels I have had to do a "little" work but it has not been bad at all. We try to take our week of family vacation at the end of the summer rush for student ministry. It is good that all the summer stuff is winding down BUT the means the fall push is coming. I find that it is great to get away before August because the next four months do not ever slow down. It has also been great to make some memories with my girls here in Surf City. We have a few more days to relax here before we head back to Clarksville. I am going to soak it all in. Just posted pics on facebook so go check that out!

From Eternity to Here by Frank Viola

Got asked to join the blog tour for Frank Viola's new book From Eternity to Here, and I was blown away by the read. Viola is the author of Pagan Christianity and Reimagining Church but this was my first book of his to read. As I was reading the book this past month a guy told me to "be careful of that Viola guy" randomly one night at a youth camp I was speaking at. It was a odd moment for me but I am thrilled I did not let other people's opinions of Frank's last two books keep me from experiencing this book. This is a theological book that is a great read. Yes, I am being serious. The book is a detailed view of God's story played out through humanity. Viola is a great writer and spends the pages of this book diving into deep theological waters with precision. Great writing and theological centered books do not usually get mentions in the same sentence but this is a great read. We spend our lives dreaming about eternity and getting to experience eternity while God's heart is passionate about seeing His Kingdom advance right here among us. This book helped me to see clearly the big picture of what God is doing right now through Christ, through His Church, and in the world around us. The book helps paint a picture of why Jesus, why the cross, why the church, and why this plan! Reading the book I felt like I was sitting down with Frank and just having a conversation or Bible study. The book is packed full of scripture and his ideas are laid out systematically. I fell in love with this book as I read it and I found my heart pounding in affirmation as I read the pages. Go and get this book today! Enjoy a great read!

SERVE new orleans //video update 2

God has been at work here in New Orleans. It has been incredible to watch our team invest in these kids. We had 83 kids at our Arts Camp and 30 kids at the bible club in the 7th ward today. The best part of this experience has been seeing kids we met last year. Today we got to reconnect with 3 more kids from the bible club last year. Check out the update video here...

SERVE new orleans //day 2 update!

Day one never got an update...why...NO INTERNET at the church. AHHHHHHH. Yes our team loves technology way to much. Wanted to get a quick update up while we are at the mall for dinner. Day one was all about travel, getting trained and set up for our Arts Camp at Gentilly Baptist Church, and our Bible club in the 7th ward. Day 2 started the adventure and our team here did an amazing job. We had some challenges come up but the team adapted and kept investing in kids. We are here to serve kids and "problems" did not keep us from that mission. It is amazing to see our team love on these kids with the love of Christ. New Orleans is a hard city and the team is rising to the challenge. Look for a video update on Tuesday. Pray for safety and influence in these kid's lives!

We are going to have video updates here on the blog so make sure and check in here to see what is going on each day as we SERVE new orleans!

new MIKESCHAIR album out July 14...

The past year I have had the joy of watching Mike Grayson lead our students at relevant student ministry in worship each week at our gathering called remix. His passion for students and for God is so genuine. This week I have had the privileged of watching his band (MIKESCHAIR) lead worship here at a camp I am speaking at. These guys are the real deal. Their hearts are aimed straight toward God and they have done an amazing job leading us this week. ALL THAT TO SAY...the band's new album hits itunes on July 14. I hope you will spend the cash and go buy this album. Just check out the EP if nothing else, the three songs are amazing. These guys are the real deal, and I hope you will support this band. If you need a band to lead worship at your next event you should consider using them. Go check out the www.mikeschair.com!

PROCESSING my communication style, just processing!

Love to get to communicate at camps with teens who do not know me. Why? It gives me a chance to once again focus on connecting with a group of people who I have no history with. The people I lead week in and week out get my style, my humor, my delivery. When you go to a camp to speak you have to work hard to connect quick so communication can be effective. People listen and process information better when they trust the communicator. So here I am this week, trying to do this all over again. With every camp it is a challenge but I know it helps me rethink who I am as a communicator. There are several guys that have influenced me directly and from a distance when it comes to speaking. More and more these days I am striving to be comfortable with who I am as a speaker. I have to be Michael Bayne, not a conglomeration or clone of all my influences. Tonight was one of those reminder nights. God worked, God spoke to kids, God helped students express their thoughts in small group. Go God! I am that communicator who is better at setting kids up to deal with truth and process it rather than the come down front "traditional" response guy. I grew up measuring effectiveness by HOW MANY PEOPLE MADE A PUBLIC DECISION with little regard for life change in the majority of people in the crowd already following Christ. Here is what I am finding my communication style is...

connect with the audience / speak truth clearly / apply / allow room for thought / get out of God's way

I think I just need to focus on what God has called me to do and how he has wired me to speak. There you it...my mid week rant as I process communication and what it means to God's people. I just pray at least I can be clear. There is just too much poor communication out there to just go through my "ministry life" adding to the noise.

Oh, by the way, this is all in process, I have the right to disagree with myself at anytime!

Generation F (the facebook generation) // what is changing?

How will social media an social networking change our generation...this post comes from the Catalyst blog. Great find by the Catalyst team and great article from Gary Hamel. No matter what you think about social networking it is changing the way we lead, connect, an share information. Each night Chelsea and I spend about 30-45 minutes checking up on facebook and twitter each on our own laptop...it is a funny picture but I think it is very common. Our interconnectedness is going to change the landscape of relationships, work, and church. Check out this perspective...
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Gary Hamel wrote an article for the Wall Street Journal about how "Generation F" - the Facebook generation - will change expectations in the workplace.

Here's his list of 12 characteristics of online life he believes will be applied to the work environment:

  1. All ideas compete on an equal footing.
  2. Contribution counts for more than credentials.
  3. Hierarchies are natural, not prescribed.
  4. Leaders serve rather than preside.
  5. Tasks are chosen, not assigned.
  6. Groups are self-defining and -organizing.
  7. Resources get attracted, not allocated.
  8. Power comes from sharing information, not hoarding it.
  9. Opinions compound and decisions are peer-reviewed.
  10. Users can veto most policy decisions.
  11. Intrinsic rewards matter most.
  12. Hackers are heroes.

I wonder if these will apply to the Church as well?

What do you think? I think Gary is right on track...thoughts???

new album from Aaron Ivey / between the beauty and the chaos

Just want to put this out there...THIS NEW ALBUM FROM AARON IVEY IS GREAT. Last night I bought the album. I like for my first listen to an album to be when I can give it full attention so I checked it out as I was about to head to bed last night. It kept me awake. Great depth in the song writing and a really refined sound from Aaron's Spur 58 days. Jimmy and Steven (former members of spur) are on the album also and it is so incredible to see these guys collaborate again on a project. I am so stoked Aaron and the band are able to serve at the austin stone (great church in austin tx) and have been free to create such an incredible album. Several tunes are songs that I hope GCC will embrace in our gathering's. Go check the album out, it is SO WORTH the purchase.
